Fairy Song

So my date went really well. I always have fun when I'm hanging out with this guy. We went and had some drinks at a bar downtown. We talked and laughed and caught up a bit. I get off work relatively late, at 11PM, so we only had a couple of hours out. We don't have the same days off ... so we'll have to figure out a day and time we CAN hang out again. I think we're doing brunch on Tuesday. He's just so gosh darn cute!!! We had a great time though, Playing music, quick brushes of the hands, smiles and knowing looks. *sighs* I really love J, but there's really something to be said for being in the 'presence' of someone, rather than relying on the power of the internet. In anycase, I can hardly wait until Tuesday. So that was night. Now I'm off to install Full tilt poker and give that game a try when I get home from work tonight.

In medias res

PRONUNCIATION:
(in MAY-dee-uhs rays, in MEE-dee-uhs REEZ, in MAY-dee-as RAYS)

MEANING:
adverb: In or into the middle of things.

ETYMOLOGY:
From Latin in medias res, from in (in, into) + medius (middle) + res (thing). A related term is ab ovo (from the beginning, literally, from the egg). Both come from Horace's Ars Poetica (Art of Poetry), where the Roman poet advises that an epic poem ought to begin in the middle of the action rather than at the beginning. The story is then told by flashbacks.

USAGE:
"The story begins in medias res, with Shay dead and Hano and Katie on the run after an unspecified but obviously grave crime."

Fairy Song

The moonlight fades from flower and rose
And the stars dim one by one;
The tale is told, the song is sung,
And the Fairy feast is done.
The night-wind rocks the sleeping flowers,
And sings to them, soft and low.
The early birds erelong will wake:
'T is time for the Elves to go.

O'er the sleeping earth we silently pass,
Unseen by mortal eye,
And send sweet dreams, as we lightly float
Through the quiet moonlit sky;--
For the stars' soft eyes alone may see,
And the flowers alone may know,
The feasts we hold, the tales we tell;
So't is time for the Elves to go.

From bird, and blossom, and bee,
We learn the lessons they teach;
And seek, by kindly deeds, to win
A loving friend in each.
And though unseen on earth we dwell,
Sweet voices whisper low,
And gentle hearts most joyously greet
The Elves where'er they go.

When next we meet in the Fairy dell,
May the silver moon's soft light
Shine then on faces gay as now,
And Elfin hearts as light.
Now spread each wing, for the eastern sky
With sunlight soon shall glow.
The morning star shall light us home:
Farewell! for the Elves must go.

Louisa May Alcott

Fried Green Tomatoes

Ingredients:
3 medium, firm green tomatoes
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 cup milk
2 beaten eggs
2/3 cup fine dry bread crumbs or cornmeal
1/4 cup olive oil
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper

Preparation:
1 Cut unpeeled tomatoes into 1/2 inch slices. Sprinkle slices with salt and pepper. Let tomato slices stand for 15 minutes. Meanwhile, place flour, milk, eggs, and bread crumbs in separate shallow dishes.

2 Heat 2 Tbsp of olive oil in a skillet on medium heat. Dip tomato slices in milk, then flour, then eggs, then bread crumbs. In the skillet, fry half of the coated tomato slices at a time, for 4-6 minutes on each side or until brown. As you cook the rest of the tomatoes, add olive oil as needed. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Brightest Blessings,
~S~
