The Looky-Loos

As I Grew Older

I have had an online persona since 1995 or there abouts. My father, when I was younger, used to work with the HUGE ARSE IBM mainframes. Needless to say, he was the 'original' computer geek. When home computers started becoming more prevailant and inexpensive, he snatched one up.

Then ... we got DIAL-UP!!!

Oh my what a connection!!! The world was our oyster, we could speak with people from all walks of life; all sorts of locations. We could SURF like no one had surfed before!!! It was PHENOMENAL. Until my mother wanted to use the phone. Then, it became quite contentious. That's a story for another day though.

When I first started 'interacting' with other people online, it was through the dreamy, yet undignified, Yahoo Chat in browser form no less. I've had several chat names. I started with surreptitious_poet. Don't ask me why. Well actually, it just seemed right as surreptitious was my favorite word in the dictionary at the time and well, hells bells, who DOESN'T write poetry?

Oh boy ... those were the days of wine and posers. In addition, it was like the internet was a teenager, all angsty and full of hormonal attitude. It was wonderful. I skipped happily from yahoo room to yahoo room as though I'd just inherited my own castle.

I fell in love and out of love a million time a day. Or at least several times a week, and all with the power generated by words created from my fingertips on a keyboard. The WONDER!!!

Skip ahead to today ... I'm still chatting in Yahoo chat. Oddly enough that venue is STILL like a hormonal teenager, yet nowadays it's more like a teenager on crack.

My moniker has changed to Surreptitious_Piscean although I'm not all that sneaky. My face has changed, more lines. My attitude has changed, I just don't care what people think. (well sometimes I do) He he! I am the adult version of that teeny-boppin-angst-riddled yahoo chat junkie! Yup ... I'm proud of it too!!!

Added to chat, these days I've been 'meeting' wonderfully funny and clever people here at blogger and at tv.com and at twop and many many other venues. It's fantastic!!!!

I'm so bloody happy that Al Gore invented the internet!!! I do wonder what fascinating new invention he'll come up with next!!!

As I Grew Older

It was a long time ago.
I have almost forgotten my dream.
But it was there then,
In front of me,
Bright like a sun--
My dream.
And then the wall rose,
Rose slowly,
Slowly,
Between me and my dream.
Rose until it touched the sky--
The wall.
Shadow.
I am black.
I lie down in the shadow.
No longer the light of my dream before me,
Above me.
Only the thick wall.
Only the shadow.
My hands!
My dark hands!
Break through the wall!
Find my dream!
Help me to shatter this darkness,
To smash this night,
To break this shadow
Into a thousand lights of sun,
Into a thousand whirling dreams
Of sun!

Langston Hughes

Oh gosh, all I can think about is all those times I stayed up ALL NIGHT jumping from chatroom to chatroom. Except I think it was AOL, not Yahoo. Good times!

I have to say, I like the internet a lot more now than I did then, haha. :-)

Dang you're interesting. Great poem by Langston Hughes. Now, I KNOW this might be politically incorrect but my sister had a little black cockerspaniel. His name was Langston. (African American Literature was always a thang in my house.)

One day Langston bit me in the face. He was re-named "Killer".

Why am I telling you this? ha ha. Great post.
