1914 I: Peace

I don't really have much to report on myself. I held another Safety Training class on Thursday from Noon to Eight. That went really well, probably one of my most favorite classes. We just had some really good people.

I am aware that my blog has been pretty erratic as of late. Mostly this is due to the overnight shifts. I just can't get used to them. In addition, I have my other 'training' days that are usually during the day.

On top of that ... with my Grandmother getting ill and being in the hospital, I just haven't really 'felt' like posting much.

My gramma is back at home now and is doing well, but the doctor says he really doesn't want her living by herself anymore. We'll see what comes of that.

Oh and I'm still needing help on some LOL Cats captions, Here

That's all folks ... until next time ...

Here's the funny for the day:

A married couple in their early 60s was celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary in a quiet, romantic little restaurant.

Suddenly, a tiny yet beautiful fairy appeared on their table.

She said, 'For being such an exemplary married couple and for being loving to each other for all this time, I will grant you each a wish.'

The wife answered, 'Oh, I want to travel around the world with my darling husband.'

The fairy waved her magic wand and - poof! - two tickets for the Queen Mary II appeared in her hands.

The husband thought for a moment: 'Well, this is all very romantic, but an opportunity like this will never come again.

I'm sorry my love, but my wish is to have a wife 30 years younger than me.'

The wife, and the fairy, were deeply disappointed, but a wish is a wish.

So the fairy waved her magic wand and poof!...the husband became 92 years old.

The moral of this story: Men who are ungrateful bastards should remember fairies are female ...

ஜ~§Quote of the Day§~ஜ

The world has achieved brilliance without wisdom, power without conscience. Our is a world of nuclear giants and ethical infants.
Omar N. Bradley

This is one of my very favorite quotes!

ஜ~§The Question Of The Day§~ஜ

If you were in perfect shape (not to say that you aren't), what would be your extreme sport of choice?

I would say it's a toss up between surfing and skateboarding. I've always found skateboarding fascinating.

ஜ~§The Word Of The Day§~ஜ

Zwieback

PRONUNCIATION:
(ZWY-bak, ZWEE-, SWY- SWEE-)

MEANING:
noun: A crispy, sweetened bread made by slicing a loaf and baking it a second time. Also known as a rusk.

ETYMOLOGY:
From German Zwieback (twice baked), from zwie (twice), a variant of zwei + backen (to bake). The word biscuit has a similar origin. It was twice-baked (or used to be), from Latin bis (twice) + coquere (to cook). The name of the color bisque owes its origin to a biscuit.

USAGE:
"Hilda Schmidt said she did all the family baking, making a variety of tasty treats, including white French bread, wheat bread, zwieback, cinnamon rolls, pancakes, coffee cakes, other cakes, and hamburger buns."

ஜ~§What I'm Reading§~ஜ

High Noon, Nora Roberts.

I've put all my other books aside for the moment, as this month Lifetime is featuring movies made from NR's novels. I'm re-reading High Noon because that's the movie that will be premiered on the 4th of April.

ஜ~§What I'm Watching§~ஜ

Wow, I haven't updated TV much at all this week. Let's see, Thursday was Supernatural and Smallville, I haven't watched Hell's Kitchen yet. Also on Thursday was Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice. I hate to say this, but Private Practice is kind of annoying me. Addison can't stop at breaking up her own marriage, she has to break up someone else's too? Sheesh writers, what's up with that?

Friday was Dollhouse and Terminator: TSCC. Then Saturday night (today) was Legend of the Seeker and the Nora Roberts movie Midnight Bayou. And that brings us up to date. Tonight (Sunday) will be Family Guy and American Dad!

ஜ~§Poem Of The Day§~ஜ

1914 I: Peace

Now, God be thanked Who has watched us with His hour,
And caught our youth, and wakened us from sleeping,
With hand made sure, clear eye, and sharpened power,
To turn, as swimmers into cleanness leaping,
Glad from a world grown old and cold and weary,
Leave the sick hearts that honour could not move,
And half-men, and their dirty songs and dreary,
And all the little emptiness of love!

Oh! we, who have known shame, we have found release there,
Where there's no ill, no grief, but sleep has mending,
Naught broken save this body, lost but breath;
Nothing to shake the laughing heart's long peace there
But only agony, and that has ending;
And the worst friend and enemy is but Death.

Rupert Brooke

ஜ~§Recipe of the Day§~ஜ

Salmon w/ Potato-Artichoke Hash

Ingredients:
8 small red new potatoes, scrubbed and sliced 1/4-inch thick
1 (14 ounce) can artichoke hearts in water, drained and halved
1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves
1 teaspoon olive oil
Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper
4 (6 ounce) skinless salmon fillets
1/2 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon white-wine vinegar

Preparation:
Preheat oven to 475 degrees F. In an 11-by-15- by-2 3/4-inch roasting pan, toss together potatoes, artichokes, thyme, 1/2 teaspoon oil, 1/2 teaspoon salt, and 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Arrange vegetables around sides of pan.

Place salmon pieces in center of pan, and press them together to form one long piece (see note). Coat with remaining 1/2 teaspoon oil, and sprinkle all over with salt and pepper. Roast, turning the vegetables once, until lightly browned and tender and salmon is just cooked through, about 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, make sauce: Stir together 1/2 teaspoon salt, a pinch pepper, parsley, mustard, vinegar, and 1 tablespoon water.
Gently separate salmon pieces, top with parsley sauce. Serve with vegetables.

Yield: 4 servings

Pressing the salmon pieces together keeps them moist while the vegetables roast.

Brightest Blessings,
~Surry~

Great joke! Love it. Have to remember it so I can tell my husband one day when I'm really peeved at him for taking me for granted. :o)

Hope your grandmother issues smooth out soon. It's so difficult when our loved ones get older. I've just gone through it with both parents. Tough stuff.

I watched a Nora Roberts movie last sunday. Unfortunately, I can't remember the title. It was good, I read the book before.

I'm glad your grandmother is doing better. I think it would be really hard to do overnight shifts and get your day/night cycles all out of sync.

Thank you for linking up to Friday's Feast. I didn't notice it until today. That makes three recipes I have that use artichoke hearts— cool.

Poopers; I hope all settles down with work and that your grandmother is on the mend. I'm sending you strength for any housing decisions you might need to be part of.

I think...rock climbing. But, also I'll be surfing with you!
